Castle Cannenburch in Vaassen, Netherlands, originated from a medieval stronghold first documented in 1365 as a fief of the Dukes of Gelre, with remnants like cellar vaults surviving beneath the current structure.

In 1543, Gelderland's infamous field marshal Maarten van Rossum purchased the ruins and rebuilt two-thirds of it as a grand Renaissance residence featuring a protruding entrance tower adorned with stone ornaments, though he died in 1555 before completion.

His nephew Hendrik van Isendoorn à Blois finished the work, and later descendants like Elbert expanded it westward in 1661-1664, relocated the entrance with a terrace and bridge by 1751, and maintained family ownership for over 300 years until donating it in the 1950s to Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen, which restored it as a public museum showcasing period interiors.
