Castle Doorwerth
Doorwerth, Netherlands, Netherlands
Castle Doorwerth in Doorwerth, Netherlands, began as a wooden tower before 1260, besieged and burned that year, then rebuilt in stone by 1280 as a rectangular residential tower with 1.2-meter-thick walls and a Rhine-fed moat, forming today's east wing.
Expanded in the 14th-15th centuries with a south wing and massive north tower by lords like Reinald van Homoet, it reached its current form around 1560 under Daem Schellart van Obbendorf, who unified the structure for comfort, followed by a 1637 bailey rebuild and anti-flood dike.
After centuries of ownership changes, military use post-1913, and wartime damage, it was restored by Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen since 1972, now operating as a museum with furnished interiors, gardens, and exhibits on its history.
