Castle Duurstede
Wijk bij Duurstede, Netherlands, Netherlands
Castle Duurstede is a medieval fortress on a moated island in Wijk bij Duurstede, Utrecht province, Netherlands, near the site of the ancient trading town Dorestad.
Built around 1270 by Zweder I van Zuylen van Abcoude as a freestanding brick keep tower with 2.5-meter-thick walls and raised entrance, it was expanded into a grand residence by Bishop David of Burgundy from 1459-1496, enclosing the donjon and adding the intact Burgundian tower amid Renaissance flourishes under successors like Philip of Burgundy.
Falling into ruin after the 1672 French invasion and Dutch Revolt neglect, with locals quarrying its stones, the town acquired it in 1852, converting fortifications into a park while preserving the prominent tower ruins accessible today.
