Castle Genhoes
Schin op Geul, Netherlands, Netherlands
Castle Genhoes in Schin op Geul, Netherlands, first mentioned in 1041, likely began as a fortified tower house dominating the Geuldal valley near Oud-Valkenburg, rebuilt between 1540-1560 by Johan I van Strijthagen into a three-winged structure with a forecourt as depicted on Jacob van Deventer's 1555 map.
Damaged during early Eighty Years' War sieges around 1578-1579, it was partially repaired then fully restored by 1608 under Casper Ulrich Hoen van Hoensbroek, who added a 1620 tower spire, double oak doors, and later Rococo expansions around 1750 by Aachen merchant Leonard Thimus including an eastern gate wing.
Acquired by Natuurmonumenten in 1955 as its oldest South Limburg property, the robust mid-16th-century marlstone tower remains its iconic feature amid minimal 18th-century alterations, now preserved as a rijksmonument within scenic estate lands.
