Castle Nederhemert
Bern, Netherlands, Netherlands
Castle Nederhemert near Bern in Nederhemert-Zuid, Netherlands, originated in the late 13th century as a fortified residential tower owned by Johan van Hemert, who dedicated it as a fief to Duke Reinoud I of Gelderland in 1318.
Expanded over centuries with corner towers, a walled courtyard, great hall, gateway around 1350, and a hexagonal tower in the 15th century, it endured looting in 1479 by 's-Hertogenbosch troops and evolved into a polygonal castle supporting Gelderland in wars against Burgundy.
Destroyed by fire in 1945 during World War II, the ruin was sold to the Dutch state in 1957, then restored between 2001-2005 by Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen to its circa-1781 form using medieval remnants like the vaulted cellar, now serving as offices with limited public access.
