Château Wittem in Wittem, Netherlands, began as an 11th-12th century stone tower in the marshy Geul Valley, first inhabited around 1106 by Guda van Valkenburg after her husband's death, later acquired in 1220 by knight Winand van Julemont of the Liègeois royal family, whose coat of arms graces the entrance's stained glass.

 Owned from 1466-1639 by the powerful Pallandt family amid its strategic vantage over Maastricht, it endured sieges in the Eighty Years' War—including occupation by Spanish forces in 1568, recapture by William of Orange, and destruction a year later—before rebuilding declared it habitable in 1619.

Reconstructed in neo-Gothic style in the 18th century under architects like J.C. van Schlaun, with added park, farm, and Capuchin monastery opposite, it transitioned to a hotel-restaurant in 1958 under successive owners until the Wilden family’s 2018 acquisition and 2019 luxury renovation into a boutique hotel with 12 suites named after historic figures and Michelin two-star restaurant Julemont.
