Chernivtsi University Botanical Garden
Chernivtsi, Ukraine, Ukraine
The Chernivtsi University Botanical Garden, founded in 1877 in the romantic style by Karl Bauer under the Imperial-Royal Franz Joseph University, is one of Ukraine's oldest scientific botanical gardens.
It was originally created to support biological research and education, becoming the only botanical garden in the Carpathian region for many decades. The garden covers 3.5 hectares and features collections of over 3,300 plant taxa from various ecological and geographic zones worldwide, including rare and endangered Ukrainian flora. Its arboretum is notable for large and old exotic trees, some approaching 200 years, planted during the establishment of the adjacent People's Garden.
The garden holds scientific facilities such as a seed laboratory, herbarium, and library, actively researching plant acclimatization, biodiversity, and sustainable landscaping. It serves as an important cultural and educational resource, attracting tens of thousands of visitors annually and contributing to regional green infrastructure and environmental awareness.
