De Haar Castle
Utrecht, Netherlands, Netherlands
De Haar Castle near Utrecht is the largest castle in the Netherlands and one of its most extravagant, blending medieval history with the opulence of early twentieth-century restoration.
Originally established in the 14th century, the castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times, eventually falling into ruin before being completely reimagined by Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nievelt and his wife, Baroness Hélène de Rothschild, between 1892 and 1912 with the help of architect Pierre Cuypers.
The restored castle features impressive towers, moats, lush gardens inspired by Versailles, and lavish interiors filled with antiques and artwork, having hosted famous guests and lavish celebrations for decades. Today, it serves as a museum and event venue, offering visitors a glimpse into both its noble past and its modern splendor.
