Doornenburg Castle
Doornenburg, Netherlands, Netherlands
Doornenburg Castle in Doornenburg, Netherlands, began as a fortified manor called Villa Dorenburc in the 9th century, evolving into a proper castle by the 13th century with expansions over time, including a 15th-century front castle featuring unique sleeping quarters, a chapel, and a farm.
Never besieged despite its robust design, it remained occupied until the 19th century, fell into decay, and was restored from 1937-1941 by a preservation foundation before near-total destruction by British bombardment in 1945 during World War II.
Fully rebuilt between 1947-1968, it stands today as one of the Netherlands' largest and best-preserved castles, managed for public visits and events on its expansive moated site.
