Gunterstein
Breukelen, Netherlands, Netherlands
Gunterstein Castle is a 17th-century moated manor in Breukelen along the Vecht River, Utrecht province, Netherlands, rebuilt in 1681 by architect Adriaan Dortsman on the foundations of a 14th-century stronghold destroyed by French forces in 1672.
Purchased by wealthy widow Magdalena Poulle—who renamed herself Lady Gunterstein—it features a symmetrical brick façade, classical pediments, and a landscaped park with French-style gardens influential for early botanists, including orangeries depicted in her commissioned etchings.
Owned by Poulle descendants to this day, the private rijksmonument preserves its historical interiors and grounds, protected for public viewing from afar.
