Founded in the 13th century as the seat of the Bishopric of Ösel-Wiek, it served as an important religious, administrative, and defensive center for several centuries. The castle complex includes impressive stone walls, watchtowers, courtyards, and a cathedral, covering more than three hectares. Over time, it was expanded and strengthened to reflect changing military needs, becoming one of the largest fortresses in Estonia.
Today, Haapsalu Castle is a major cultural attraction featuring a museum on medieval history and panoramic views from its towers. It is also famous for the legend of the White Lady, a ghostly figure said to appear in the castle chapel during full moons in August, making the site a unique blend of history, architecture, and local folklore.
