Kiltsi Manor
Liivaküla, Lääne-Viru County, Estonia, Estonia
Kiltsi Manor is one of Estonia’s most distinctive historic manor estates, located in Lääne-Viru County near Väike-Maarja.
The estate dates back to at least the 15th century and was built on the site of an earlier medieval vassal castle that was destroyed during the Livonian War. The present manor building, with its castle-like appearance, took shape around 1790. The manor is especially famous as the home of the renowned explorer and admiral Adam Johann von Krusenstern, who led Russia’s first circumnavigation of the globe between 1803 and 1806.
He lived and worked at Kiltsi Manor, and his achievements are commemorated there today. Featuring round towers, elegant wings, and a blend of medieval and later architectural styles, Kiltsi Manor is both a historical landmark and a cultural attraction. After extensive restoration in the 2000s, it now houses a school and a museum that highlights the manor’s history and Krusenstern’s legacy.
