Vao Tornlinnus, or Vao Tower Castle, is one of Estonia’s best-preserved medieval tower fortresses, located in the village of Vao in Lääne-Viru County.

Built from local limestone in the second half of the 14th century, it served as a small vassal castle for local nobles and was designed more as a fortified residence than a major military stronghold. The four-story tower contains features that illustrate medieval daily life, including living quarters, a chapel, a fireplace, and even a medieval latrine.

Its well-preserved structure offers a rare glimpse into how Estonia’s lesser nobility lived during the Middle Ages. Restored in 1986, the tower now functions as a museum showcasing the history of the fortress, the manor, and the surrounding area. Visitors can explore exhibits, reconstructed medieval interiors, and artistic displays that bring the site’s rich heritage to life.
