Heemstede Castle
Heemstede, Netherlands, Netherlands
Heemstede Castle in Heemstede, Netherlands, was first constructed around 1280 by Dirk van Hoylede near the Spaarne River's mouth into the Haarlemmermeer as a strategic fortified residence.
Repeatedly destroyed by fire and rebuilt through the centuries, it reached prominence under Adriaan Pauw, who acquired it in 1620, expanded it significantly, and added the Pons Pacis bridge in 1648 to celebrate the Treaty of Münster ending the Eighty Years' War.
After years of neglect, the main structure was demolished in 1810, leaving only the 1630 gatekeeper's house 'Nederhuys' and medieval foundations visible today as remnants of this once-grand site.
