Heeswijk Castle
Heeswijk-Dinther, Netherlands, Netherlands
Heeswijk Castle in Heeswijk-Dinther, Netherlands, began as an 11th-century motte-and-bailey fortress around 1080 on a meander of the Aa River, providing refuge during regional wars between Brabant and Gelderland in the 14th century when locals sheltered behind its new brick walls and towers.
Rebuilt multiple times through the 15th and 16th centuries with round corner towers, an overhanging tower, and a striped brick-stone outer bailey, it fell into disrepair until 1834 when Baron Andreas van den Bogaerde van Terbrugge purchased and extensively restored it in neo-Gothic style, adding a large round 'Iron Tower,' armory, and gallery to house his art collection.
Now a museum showcasing its medieval-to-19th-century evolution amid the Heeswijk Estate, it hosts exhibits, events, and nature walks as Brabant's 'Nature Gateway'.
