Hermann Castle, also known as Narva Castle, is a medieval fortress located in the Estonian border city of Narva on the banks of the Narva River.

Originally established by the Danes in the 13th century, it became one of the most important defensive strongholds in the region and played a key role in controlling trade and movement between East and West. The castle stands directly opposite Russia’s Ivangorod Fortress, making it one of the few places in Europe where two medieval castles face each other across an international border.

Over the centuries, it was ruled by the Danes, the Livonian Order, the Swedes, and the Russians, each leaving their mark on its architecture and history. Despite suffering heavy damage during World War II, Hermann Castle was extensively restored and now houses the Narva Museum. Visitors can explore its exhibitions, historic halls, and the impressive Tall Hermann Tower, which offers panoramic views of Narva, the river, and the neighboring fortress across the border.
