Het Amsterdamse Bos
Amsterdam/Amstelveen, Netherlands
The Amsterdamse Bos is a large, man-made park located between Amsterdam and Amstelveen in the Netherlands, covering about 1,000 hectares, which is roughly three times the size of New York's Central Park. It was mainly created during the 1930s as a public works project to provide employment during the Great Depression; over 20,000 unemployed people planted the trees by hand.
The park was designed in the style of an English landscape park, featuring naturalistic elements like winding streams, rolling meadows, and groves of trees to create a spacious, relaxing environment. Construction continued until the 1970s, with interruptions caused by World War II, during which parts of the park were used for military purposes. Today, Amsterdamse Bos offers a wide range of recreational activities including rowing on an artificial lake called the Bosbaan, swimming in ponds, cycling, horseback riding, and picnicking. It also hosts a variety of facilities such as farms, an open-air theatre, playgrounds, and areas for naturist recreation.
The park balances natural beauty with active leisure opportunities, making it a popular green space for locals and visitors alike. It is a blend of carefully planned landscapes and wild nature, reflecting both historical development and contemporary use.
