Het Kasteel van Rhoon
Rhoon, Netherlands, Netherlands
Het Kasteel van Rhoon in Rhoon, Netherlands, is a fortified donjon originally built in 1432 by the Van Duyvelant family on the site of an earlier castle destroyed by the St. Elizabeth's Flood of 1421.
An earlier structure called Marenburch, located 500 meters east, had been granted to Biggo van Duyveland by Dirk VII of Holland, but it too was ravaged by floods and later by the Geuzen in 1572, leading to rebuilding around 1598 with wings, gabled roofs, polygonal stair towers, and features like a house chapel for Catholic services during Protestant mandates.
Owned by families like Bentinck and Van Hoboken, it fell into disrepair after 1913 until restoration in 1975 by the Zuid-Hollands Landschap and Stichting Kasteel van Rhoon, preserving 17th-century interiors amid English and Baroque gardens, now used for events.
