Het Witte Kasteel
Kasteellaan, Netherlands
Het Witte Kasteel, located in the village of Loon op Zand in the Netherlands, is a historic castle with origins dating back to the late 14th century, around 1383-1387. It was originally built by Pauwels van Haastrecht after the Lordship was granted to him, and the castle expanded over the centuries with notable architectural changes, including a Renaissance outer bailey constructed in the 16th century.
The castle has a rich history involving noble families such as Van Horne, Van Abcoude, Van Haastrecht, and Van Immerseel, and it played strategic roles during conflicts like the Eighty Years' War. After centuries of private ownership, including by noble families and an antiques dealer, the castle was donated to a foundation run by volunteers who have worked to restore it and maintain its grounds.
Today, Het Witte Kasteel serves as a cultural venue for weddings, exhibitions, and events, combining its medieval heritage with modern use and opened periodically for tours that reveal its layered history.
