Hohenlimburg Castle
Hagen, Germany, Netherlands
Hohenlimburg Castle, located in Hagen, Germany, is Westphalia's only largely preserved medieval hilltop castle, built around 1240 by Count Dietrich I of Altena-Isenberg on a mountain spur overlooking the Lenne Valley.
It served as the seat of the County of Limburg until 1808, enduring sieges like those in 1288 by the Counts of Mark, 1584 by Cologne troops, and 1633 during the Thirty Years' War, which destroyed its outer bailey, while owners from the Neuenahr and Bentheim-Tecklenburg families expanded it into a residence with a "Nassauer Schlösschen" around 1620 and late-baroque gardens by 1756.
Today, owned by the Bentheim-Tecklenburg family, it houses a museum with castle history exhibits, a cold rolling mill display, and offers guided tours of its impressive keep, walls, and panoramic views.
