Huis Doorn
Doorn, Netherlands, Netherlands
Huis Doorn is a historic moated castle in Doorn village, Utrecht province, Netherlands, originally built in the 14th century as a fortified residence by Heinrich van Mierlaer, provost of Utrecht Cathedral, replacing an earlier homestead burned in 1322.
Restored in 1635 by Reynier van Golsteyn and rebuilt in the late 18th century into a neo-classical country house with plastered facades, a preserved southwest tower, and English landscape gardens, it gained fame as the exile home of Germany's last emperor, Wilhelm II, from 1920 until his 1941 death.
Seized as enemy property post-World War II, it now operates as a museum preserving the imperial furnishings, gardens, and his mausoleum.
