Owned by families like the Cusers, Van Borsselen, and notably Hendrik van Brederode—who added a kaatsbaan (real tennis court) around 1560—it served as Spanish headquarters under Don Frederik during the 1572-1573 Siege of Haarlem, who then blew it up to deny rebels a base.
The ruins were quarried for Haarlem's rebuilding after a 1576 fire, with only the kaatsbaan tower surviving for later uses like a farmhouse and now a city canteen in a nursery garden, inspiring many 17th-18th century artists.
