Huys Dever
Lisse, Netherlands, Netherlands
Huys Dever is a small medieval residential tower, or donjon, in Lisse, Netherlands, built in a distinctive D-shape shortly after 1375 by knight Reinier Dever of an old noble Holland family, once positioned at the edge of the Lisser Poel lake connected to the Haarlemmermeer.
It originally included a fortified tower, outer bailey, and wide moat, serving as home to noble families like Van Matenesse, Van Schagen, and Heereman van Zuydtwijk, with a larger manor house added between 1630 and 1634 before disuse after 19th-century polderization led to collapse and ruin.
A 1970s citizen initiative restored the thick-walled donjon with a new roof, recreated foundations, moat, and gardens, now open to visitors who can see authentic vaults, hearths, and excavated artifacts on display.
