Kasteel Ammersoyen
Ammerzoden, Netherlands, Netherlands
Kasteel Ammersoyen in Ammerzoden, Netherlands, is one of the Netherlands' best-preserved medieval water castles, built around 1350 by the Van Herlaer family as a square fortress with four corner towers, thick walls, and a moat originally fed by the nearby Maas River.
It endured occupations during the Guelders Wars, Spanish invasions in 1572, and French threats in 1672—where owner Thomas van Arkel paid 7,000 guilders to spare it—plus a devastating 1590 fire, yet survived largely intact through noble families like the Van Arkels.
Used as a Clarissine convent from 1876 after the moat was partially filled for a chapel, it suffered WWII bomb damage but was restored by Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen since 1974, now offering medieval tours and reenactments on its island site.
