Kasteel Brakel
Brakel, Gelderland, Netherlands, Netherlands
Kasteel Brakel in Brakel, Gelderland, Netherlands, dates to the mid-13th century as a square moated water fortress near the Afgedamde Maas and Waal rivers, first mentioned when struck by lightning in 1321, prompting knight Eustachius van Brakel to pledge it to the Count of Gelre for protection.
Repeatedly devastated—in 1407 by Holland's troops, 1574 by Spanish plunderers, and catastrophically in 1672 when French forces during the Rampjaar blew it up after the owner refused tribute—it was never rebuilt, leaving a romantic ruin with a round tower, residential wing remnants, and preserved vaulted foundations.
Incorporated around 1820 into an early 19th-century landscape park by Wilhelmus van Dam van Brakel—Gelderland's sole surviving example of such design—the site now belongs to Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen, blending medieval remnants with the nearby 1768 Huis Brakel.
