Kasteel de Keverberg
Kessel, Netherlands, Netherlands
Kasteel de Keverberg in Kessel, Netherlands, originated around the 10th century as a square toll tower on an artificial motte to control Maas River traffic, later expanded in the 12th century with a marlstone ring wall, gate tower, residential tower, and Maas tower.
Owned by counts of Kessel like Ansfried and Balderik, then the Counts of Gelre from the late 13th century, it housed noble families including Van Merwijck and Baron van Keverberg from 1798, who renamed it, before serving as a convent for shippers' children.
Burned and exploded by retreating Germans on November 17, 1944, the ruins lay unrestored until community efforts led to a 2015 reconstruction blending medieval remnants with modern steel, glass, and slate into a venue showcasing its panoramic views and thousand-year history.
