Kasteel en park Rosendael
Rozendaal, Netherlands, Netherlands
Kasteel en park Rosendael, located in Rozendaal, Netherlands, originated as a late-medieval castle first mentioned in 1314, built by Count Reinoud I of Gelre, with only its massive round donjon—featuring 4-meter-thick walls—surviving from the original structure.
Subsequent owners like Dirck van Dorth in the late 16th century added gardens, ponds, and streams, while in 1722 under the Torck family, a square house, stables, and shell galleries designed by Daniel Marot transformed it into a stately country house.
The 19th-century landscape park by Jan David Zocher Jr. introduced winding paths, merged ponds, and prank fountains known as the "Bedriegertjes"; damaged in World War II by bombs and a V2 rocket, it fell into disrepair until donated in 1977 to Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen foundation for restoration and public access.
