Nijenrode Kasteel
Breukelen, Netherlands, Netherlands
Nijenrode Castle (Kasteel Nijenrode) is a historic 13th-century moated fortress in Breukelen, Utrecht province, Netherlands, strategically positioned on the narrowest part of the Vecht River for trade and defense.
Founded around 1260-1280 by knight Gerard Splinter van Ruwiel—meaning "newly cleared land"—it was destroyed in 1481 and 1511, then rebuilt in Dutch Renaissance style between 1632-1642 by Bernard van den Bongard III, and torched by French troops in 1673 during their occupation.
Restored by subsequent owners like the Ortt family merchants and later coffee trader Michiel Onnes, who added neo-Tudor elements and expanded the estate, it has housed Nyenrode Business University since 1946 amid its landscaped grounds and drawbridges.
