Kasteel Stapelen
Boxtel, Netherlands, Netherlands
Kasteel Stapelen in Boxtel, Netherlands, was built around the 13th century by a member of the Van Randerode family, with its first mention dating to 1293 as a fortified manor initially a fief of the County of Loon.
It passed to Willem I van Boxtel and later families like Van Merheim, Van Ranst, and Van Horne until 1763, serving as a residence described in 1645 as a large old castle with wide moats; in 1672, French King Louis XIV stayed there during the Rampjaar while besieging Den Bosch.
Heavily altered over time through wars and expansions, including 1858 renovations by owner Jan Hendrik Mahie adding towers, pinnacles, and ornamentation for a more castle-like look, it was sold to Assumptionist priests in 1906 and now functions as a conference center with preserved late medieval to 19th-century elements.
