Kasteel Strije / Slotbossetoren
Oosterhout, Netherlands, Netherlands
Kasteel Strije, also called Slotbossetoren, in Oosterhout, Netherlands, began as a castle constructed around 1289 by Willem IV van Strijen on a key border spot between Holland and Brabant counties.
Around 1325, Willem van Duvenvoorde, a wealthy and influential noble, bought and massively expanded it, adding a second moat, new buildings, and a six-story tower to the original three-story structure plus outer bailey.
It lost strategic value after the 1421 St. Elizabeth Flood created marshes nearby, was destroyed in the 16th century during the Eighty Years' War, then quarried for bricks in 1617 and partially blasted with gunpowder in 1753, leaving just a fragment of the tall keep tower amid Slotbosse woods as a preserved ruin today.
