Kasteel Van Breda
Breda, Netherlands, Netherlands
Kasteel van Breda in Breda, Netherlands, originated as a 12th-century fortress that grew with the city, reinforced around 1350 by Jan II van Polanen with towers and a moat before passing to the Nassau family in 1403 via his daughter's marriage.
Transformed into a Renaissance palace in the 16th century by Hendrik III of Nassau with Italian architect Tommaso Vincidor, it hosted William of Orange as a military base during the Dutch Revolt, saw the 1667 Treaty of Breda signed to end the Second Anglo-Dutch War, and later served French forces, becoming the Royal Military Academy in 1828.
Now home to the KMA with limited public access, its courtyard and Spanjaardsgat gate reflect centuries of rebuilding from medieval stronghold to grand residence.
