Koluvere Loss (Koluvere Castle) is one of Estonia’s best-preserved medieval castles, located in Lääne County on an artificial island surrounded by the Liivi River.

A fortress has stood on this strategic site since the 13th century, and from 1439 it served as one of the main residences of the bishops of Saare-Lääne. The castle combines medieval defensive architecture with later manor-house features. Its oldest part is a square tower dating from the early medieval period, while a large round cannon tower was added in the 16th century as military technology evolved.

Over time, the fortress lost its defensive role and was transformed into a comfortable aristocratic residence with elegant interiors. Koluvere Castle is also known for its connection to Duchess Augusta of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, who lived there in exile in the late 18th century. Today, the restored castle remains an important historical landmark, admired for its picturesque setting, distinctive towers, and rich blend of medieval and manor-era history.
