Kyivs'ke Reservoir
Kyiv, Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine
Kyivs’ke Reservoir, locally known as the Kyiv Sea, is a large artificial lake on the Dnipro River in Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine, created between 1960 and 1966 by the construction of the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant dam at Vyshhorod, north of Kyiv.
The reservoir covers about 922 square kilometers, stretches roughly 110 km in length and 12 km in width, and has an average depth of four to eight meters, with a total water volume of about 3.7 cubic kilometers. It is mainly used for hydroelectric power generation, supplying drinking water and cooling water for industry, and providing water for irrigation and navigation along the Dnipro.
The Kyiv Sea also serves as a popular recreational area near the capital, with boating, fishing, and small resorts along its shores, though it has faced environmental challenges such as altered river flow, reduced oxygen in the water, and impacts on local fish populations.
