Landsfort Herle
Heerlen, Netherlands, Netherlands
Landsfort Herle was a medieval fortified settlement in central Heerlen, Netherlands, built around the 13th century by the counts of Ahr-Hochstaden as a rare Dutch example of a Kirchenburg—a church (Pancratiuskerk) enclosed by defensive curtain walls, towers, and a wide moat.
Rebuilt in 1244 under the Dukes of Brabant, it featured three gates, the Schelmentoren prison tower, and 2-meter-thick walls protecting houses and a graveyard, serving as Heerlen's core until walls were dismantled by the 19th century.
Today, remnants like excavated wall sections and the Schelmentoren evoke its past amid Pancratiusplein, with modern projects reviving its layout through sustainable urban design.
