Lihula Castle
Lihula Parish, Estonia, Estonia
Lihula Castle is a medieval fortress site in western Estonia that was built between 1238 and 1242 on the location of an earlier Estonian hillfort.
It served as an important center for the Saare-Lääne Bishopric and the Livonian Order, helping to control trade routes and protect the surrounding region. The castle was one of the most distinctive 13th-century fortifications in the Baltic region, featuring strong defensive walls, towers, and multiple layers of protection. During the Livonian War in the 16th century, it changed hands several times and suffered heavy damage.
Eventually, it was abandoned and not rebuilt. Today, only the ruins of Lihula Castle remain, but they continue to be an important historical landmark. Archaeological research has revealed much about its unique design, and visitors can explore the preserved walls while enjoying views over the surrounding landscape and learning about Estonia’s medieval past.
