Loevestein Castle
Poederoijen, Netherlands, Netherlands
Loevestein Castle is a 14th-century water castle in Poederoijen, Gelderland province, Netherlands, strategically located at the Maas and Waal rivers' confluence.
Built between 1357-1368 by knight Dirk Loef van Horne as a toll-collection stronghold, it was seized by the Counts of Holland by 1372 and expanded in the 16th century under William the Silent into a fortress with bastions, moats, and earthen walls.
Famous as a state prison from 1619 for political figures like Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and Hugo Grotius—who escaped in a famous 1621 book chest—it formed part of the Dutch Water Line defense until World War II, now operating as a museum with medieval exhibits.
