Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University (Luhansʹkyy Natsionalʹnyy Universytet Imeni Tarasa Shevchenka) is one of the oldest universities in eastern Ukraine, founded in 1921 as a teachers’ training institute and later named after the poet Taras Shevchenko in 1939. It developed into a major public university with institutes, faculties and colleges offering around 250–300 specialties across fields such as education, humanities, natural sciences, economics, culture and arts, and has been repeatedly recognised for the high quality of its educational and research work. Because of the conflict in Luhansk Oblast, the university has been evacuated several times, moving its legal address to Starobilsk (1 Gogol Square) and its actual teaching base to Lubny in Poltava region, where it continues to operate using both on-site and distance learning to maintain programmes and support thousands of students despite the war.
