Lviv University Botanical Garden
Lviv, Ukraine, Ukraine
The Lviv University Botanical Garden, founded in 1852 by professor Hiacynt Łobarzewski, is one of Ukraine's oldest and most significant botanical gardens, located in the city of Lviv.
It was initially established on the grounds of a former Trinitarian monastery and designed with the help of landscape architect Karl Bauer, who created greenhouses and an English-style dendrological park.
Over the years, the garden expanded its collections with around 6,000 plant taxa, including both native and exotic species, and played an important role in botanical research, education, and conservation. In 1911, the university acquired a larger plot called Tsetnerivka to further develop the garden with various terrain features such as ponds and plateaus, which allowed the creation of diverse plant biotopes.
Despite suffering damages during World War II, the garden continued to grow under new leadership, expanding its territory and plant collections. Today, it serves as a scientific and educational institution, preserving a rich variety of plant species and serving as a natural oasis within the city.
