Middachten Castle
De Steeg, Netherlands, Netherlands
Middachten Castle in De Steeg, Netherlands, was first mentioned in 1190 as a fortified residence owned by Jacobus de Mithdac, later transferred to Count Reinald of Gelre in the 14th century and held as a loan by the Steenre family until 1625.
Repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt amid conflicts, it suffered major damage in 1672-1673 from retreating French troops, prompting Godard van Reede, Count of Athlone, and Ursula van Raesfelt to reconstruct it between 1693-1698 in the style of Het Loo Palace, designed by architects Jacobus Roman and Steven Vennecool, with later English and partially restored French gardens.
Still privately owned by the same family for over 800 years and a Top 100 Dutch heritage site since 2004, the moated manor features a grand dome over its courtyard hall and opens its gardens seasonally to visitors.
