Nemerlaer Castle
Haaren, Netherlands, Netherlands
Nemerlaer Castle in Haaren, Netherlands, is a 14th-century moated stronghold first mentioned in 1303 as the home of Knight Geerlinck van den Bossche, named after the Nemer River and a forest clearing called Laer.
Likely originating as a 12th-century hunting lodge, it was rebuilt and expanded in the 15th century, with 17th-century additions including a tower, an 18th-century Louis XIV-style makeover, and a major 1880 neo-Renaissance and neo-Gothic renovation by owner Donatus van den Bogaerde van Terbrugge, who willed it uninhabited for nearly 70 years after his 1895 death.
Sold to Brabants Landschap in 1964, it was later occupied by castle expert Anton van Oirschot and now serves as a private residence with a basement café, hosting cultural events, exhibitions, concerts, and weddings.
