Radboud Castle
Medemblik, Netherlands, Netherlands
Radboud Castle in Medemblik, Netherlands, was constructed around 1288 by Count Floris V of Holland as one of five coercive strongholds to subdue rebellious West Frisians after his father's death, completed before the St. Lucia's Flood of 1287.
Originally a square fortress with four round corner towers named Bottle, Mole, Monk, and Prison, plus square towers and a moat enclosing soldiers' quarters, it protected townsfolk from pirate raids in 1517 but declined after Medemblik's walls rose in 1572, leading to partial demolition and repurposing.
By the 19th century it faced ruin, but restoration in neo-Gothic style preserved original walls, floors, and beams, turning it into a medieval museum today where visitors explore exhibits and battlements.
