Reinhardstein Castle
Waimes, Belgium, Netherlands
Reinhardstein Castle is a medieval fortress perched on a rocky outcrop above the Warche River valley near Ovifat in Waimes, Liège Province, eastern Belgium's High Fens region—not the Netherlands.
Built in 1354 by local lord Renaud (Reinhard) of Waimes with permission from Duke Wenceslas of Luxembourg, possibly atop Gallo-Celtic ruins, it passed through noble families like Nassau and Metternich before near-total demolition in the early 19th century.
Lovingly rebuilt stone-by-stone in the 1960s-1970s by Professor Jean Overloop using historical records, it now features red brick towers, sandstone details, a keep, and furnished medieval interiors as a museum open to visitors amid forested trails.
