Ruins of Teylingen
Voorhout, Netherlands, Netherlands
Ruins of Teylingen consist of the striking remnants of a 13th-century round water castle in Voorhout, South Holland province, Netherlands, including a massive circular ring wall, substantial residential tower partially encircled by a moat, and traces of a former outer bailey.
Built by Willem van Teylingen to guard the Rhine dike and north-south route to Haarlem—once a hunting lodge and forestry outpost for the counts of Holland—it housed notable figures like Countess Jacoba of Bavaria, who spent her final days there amid 14th-17th century expansions.
Damaged by fire during the Eighty Years' War and fully ruined after a 1675 blaze, the site was preserved by the state in 1889 with ongoing consolidations, now open weekends from March to November as a protected monument amid former kitchen gardens linked to nearby Keukenhof.
