Schaloen Castle
Schin op Geul, Netherlands, Netherlands
Schaloen Castle in Schin op Geul, Netherlands, was originally built around 1200 as a defensive fortress by the Van Hulsberg family, featuring thick basalt walls, massive buttresses, guerite towers, and a moat for protection.
Nearly destroyed by fire in 1575 during wartime, it was rebuilt in 1656 by Johan Reinier Hoen van Cartils into a rectangular marl structure with four stories, later gaining an 18th-century outer bailey, gatehouse, and farm buildings.
In 1894, architect Pierre Cuypers restored it in neo-Gothic style for the De Villers Masbourg d'Eclaye family, adding towers, a bay window, balcony, and regularized facades, before it became a hotel in 1986 after WWII looting and sales.
