Slangenburg Castle
Doetinchem, Netherlands, Netherlands
Slangenburg Castle in Doetinchem, Netherlands, originated as a manor house around 1354 under Maes (Thomas) van Baer, evolving into an L-shaped structure with a round tower by the late 15th or early 16th century.
Sacked by State troops in 1585, it lay in ruins until rebuilt during the Twelve Years' Truce around 1612 by Frederik van Baer, with further expansions into a U-shaped form by his son Frederik Johan van Baer, a general known as General Slangenburg, around 1670-1675, featuring classicist interiors with paintings by Gerard Hoet.
Sold in 1772 to the Steengracht family amid financial woes, it passed to German owners Passmann after World War II, who were later deemed enemy property and confiscated by the Dutch government; now managed by Monumentenbezit since 2016 and partially open to the public amid its wooded estate.
