Ternopil is a city in western Ukraine, located on the banks of the Seret River and serving as the administrative center of Ternopil Oblast in the historic regions of Galicia and Podolia. It is one of the main urban hubs in this part of the country, with a population of around 225,000 and a strong regional role in education, culture, and transport. Founded in the 16th century under the name Tarnopol, it has been ruled at various times by Poland, the Austrian Empire, and the Soviet Union, which left a mix of architectural styles and a multi‑ethnic cultural legacy. Today Ternopil is known for its green spaces, including a large artificial lake in the city center, several parks, and hundreds of preserved castles and historic buildings in the surrounding region. The city also hosts multiple universities and cultural events, earning it the informal title of a “student capital” and a lively festival atmosphere alongside quieter, tree‑lined neighborhoods.
