Zwijnsbergen
Helvoirt, Netherlands, Netherlands
Zwijnsbergen Castle in Helvoirt, Netherlands, originated in the 13th century as a fortified manor known as 'mansus Zwensberch,' likely first owned by the De Sweensbergh family.
Expanded in 1446 by Willem Aerts van Heirn and rebuilt around 1552 under Walraven Draeck with a rectangular house, 16th-century tower, and cellars, it passed to families like the Clarissen sisters, Bloeyman, Van Grevenbroeck, Martini, Sloet, De Jonge (who adopted the Van Zwijnsbergen name), and finally the Van Lanschot family in 1914, who still own it privately.
The main building dates to the late 17th century, with 1817 renovations, 1884 outbuildings, a moated site connected to the Zandley River, and landscape gardens added from the late 18th century; a 2001 fire destroyed much of it, but restoration brought it back to its historical splendor.
