Rajhenburg Castle in Brestanica, Slovenia, is one of the country's oldest fortresses, first mentioned in 895 and rebuilt between 1131-1147 by Archbishop Konrad I of Salzburg on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Sava River and Brestanica stream. Managed by the Rajhenburški ministerial family after whom it was named, it boasts Slovenia's oldest Romanesque chapel from the early 12th century and preserved early 16th-century Renaissance frescoes in the hall, evolving through Gothic and later additions by successive owners. Converted into a Trappist monastery in 1881 until WWII German occupation turned it into a deportation camp, it later served penal institutions until 1968, undergoing full 2011 restoration to reopen as a museum and event venue highlighting its medieval heritage.
