Vipava Old Castle
Vipava, Slovenia, Slovenia
Vipava Old Castle, also known as Stari grad or Upper Vipava Castle, is a ruined 12th-century Romanesque fortress on a hill above the town of Vipava in southwestern Slovenia. First mentioned in 1275 under Patriarchate of Aquileia ownership and built atop prehistoric settlements by the Counts of Bogen around 1100, its rectangular layout features thick walls enclosing two residential palaces and a mighty defensive bergfried tower, later enhanced with 15th-century semicircular walls and Renaissance fortifications after Turkish raids. Passing through Habsburgs, Herbersteins, and Lanthieris until abandoned in the 17th century, the weathered ruins now offer hiking access and panoramic valley views as a popular local heritage site.
