Žovnek Castle is a medieval stone ruin perched on a hill above Lake Žovnek near Podvrh in Braslovče municipality, Slovenia, with visible 12th-century walls revealing its former role as a noble fortress. First documented in 1278 as Castrum Sevnekke (later Sannegg), it originated around 1130 as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Žovnek—who took their name from it—and later Counts of Celje, featuring defensive ditches, a rectangular entrance tower with drawbridge, two-story bergfried, round corner towers, outer walls, and arcaded courtyard amid strategic terrain. Abandoned after the family relocated to Celje in 1333, it passed to Habsburgs until 1600 before gradual decay, now accessible by hiking trails offering views linking medieval heritage to the local landscape.
